What inspires me as a musician and singer-songwriter?

I get my inspiration from several kinds of musical styles and genres. My musical upbringing consisted of Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, and musicals like “The Sound of Music “ and “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Having a piano at home led to piano lessons and learning both classical music and boogie. Both my brother and I also listened to all those glam rock bands that were popular during the 70’s and 80’s (and still are).

During the 80’s I started playing saxophone, which led to both playing in a brass band and being asked to add my sax to a few blues and rock bands. So there was a lot of listening to and playing blues and rock, mostly rock from the 50’s to the 70’s and some 80’s as well.

During this time, my brother introduced me to reggae. Our favorite artists were Bob Marley and the Swedish ”Father of Reggae” Peps Persson.

Since then, reggae music has just kind of stuck with me. Then during the 80’s, I got into the ska wave with bands like Madness and The Specials. Ska fit very well with sax playing, so I was hooked!

My mother listened a lot to country music, both American and Swedish, which have also influenced my choice of songs and what I listen to. I think most everything we listen to influences us in some way, whether we like it or not.

Some of the artists that have inspired me are Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, UB40, Elvis Presley, and Shania Twain, to name few. More recently, I’ve learned about artists like Peter Hollens, Lindsey Sterling, Home Free, The Harp Twins, and the MonaLisa Twins. Plus, there are a lot of indie or new artists that I’ve come in contact with through different artist groups and artist coaching.

What music inspires you? I’d love to know!

Warm regards,
